False Memory Essay -- distorted memory, fabricated recollections
Memory is one of the most critical parts of cognition. It is important because it is involved in almost every aspect of cognition including problem solving, decision making, attention, and perception. Because of this importance, people rely on oneââ¬â¢s memory to make important decisions. The value of oneââ¬â¢s memory in this society is so high that it is used as evidence to either save oneââ¬â¢s life or kill oneââ¬â¢s life during murder trials. But as many of the cognitive psychologists know, humanââ¬â¢s memory can cause many errors. One of these errors is false memory which is either remembering events that never happened or remembering events differently from the actual event. This finding of false memory raised big interests among psychologists and general public and many researches were done in order to find more about the false memory. The constructive approach to memory, which states that memory is constructed by person based on what really happened in addition to personââ¬â¢s other knowledge, experiences, and expectations, supports the idea of false memory. Just like what constructive approach to memory states, the false memory can be created by personââ¬â¢s knowledge, common biases, and suggestions. The present study was done in order to demonstrate one methodology that biases people to create and recall false memories. The present study is based on Deeseââ¬â¢s experiment in 1959 and also on Roediger and McDermottââ¬â¢s experiment in 1995. The participants will be presented with sequence of words visually, and then they would have to classify a set of words as either in the sequence or not in the sequence. Our hypothesis is that people will create false memories and recall distractor words that are related to the sequence of words presented significantly m... ...re I think if the participants are not aware of it, the false recall rate will increase. And if there are more words presented, my assume is that it will increase the false recall rate. We can imply this finding of false memory in many ways in our lives. We all should note that our memory cannot be trusted 100% and we should not solely rely on our memory when it comes to making critical decisions. Just like the murder trial example used in earlier, when it comes to eye witnessing, the judge should take possible false memory into account when making the final decisions and try to obtain objective evidence along with the memory of the witness. Discuss the Advantage and Disadvantage of Terrestrial Plant and Aquatic Plant
Student Name: Kwok Matthew Chun Wai Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for plants of living in an aqueous environment compared to a terrestrial one? Introduction: Plants are commonly classified to two main types: aquatic plant and land plant. They have different features to adapt the living environment. What by meant is that they require different adaptions to stay alive in their respective environment such as humidity and structure of leaves. Aquatic plants referred to as hydrophytes or macrophytes. They need a special adaptation to live in water or at water surfaces and the most common adaption is aerenchyma. Land plants like the name mentioned is plants that live primarily in terrestrial habitats. As they are living in different environment, there are advantages and disadvantages for living in a terrestrial environment as well as aquatic one. Photosynthesis in Aquatic Plants and Land Plants Process of producing food with light energy remains the same for both aquatic and terr estrial plants. They both require the same raw materials ââ¬â carbon dioxide and water to synthesis glucose.Terrestrial plants can absorb carbon dioxide from atmospheric air and water from the soil through their roots. Obviously land plants can work through photosynthesis easily without any special adaptations. But terrestrial plants need to face a problem of abundance of water. Abundance of water: One of the three requirements of photosynthesis ââ¬â water is in a sufficient amount for aquatic plants as they are submerge in water. Therefore it is easily to retain water from the surrounding for them. So the major challenge of aquatic plants is to obtain carbon dioxide and light. While terrestrial plants are mostly challenged on how to prevent water loss from evaporation and desiccation due to weather or a low humidity environment. Hence, cuticles on the upper surface of epidemics to prevent water loss are more likely to appear in terrestrial plants. Another way to deal with de siccation for land plants is to evolve roots to reach water sources deep in the ground and work as transporting vesicles. Gas Exchange: Both types of plants have each developed unique feature to work for gas xchange as availability of carbon dioxide is different in two environments. In order for land plants to access carbon dioxide in air, they must open the pores in their leaves without allowing too much water loss. So apart from cuticles, special pores called stomata allocated underside of the leaves will be closed when desiccation occur. To deal with low availability of carbon dioxide in water, aquatic plants have special gas chambers to store carbon dioxide for use during time of storage. As a result, terrestrial plants may take a geographical advantage.Absorption of Nutrient: Terrestrial Plants absorb water and other elements from soil by evolving roots to reach deep down to the ground. Comparing with aquatic plants, it is more difficult for terrestrial plants to absorb nutrien t as in liquid medium, nutrients can be found everywhere easily, and aquatic plants can absorb them directly through the leave surface. This is a challenge for land plants. Support Aquatic Plant do not affect by gravity much because of the water movement reinforce the structure of whole plant effectively. Terrestrial plants (e. g. a pine tree) invest amounts of resources in support structures (Produce starchy compounds to thicken cell wall ââ¬â wood) whereas aquatic plants invest fewer resources to support. Terrestrial Plants need strong stems and woody cells structure to withstand the force of gravity that will push them down. This evidence shows that the advantage of water plants and drawback of land plant. Reproduction Aquatic plants take advantage on reproduction by simple methods. Way of aquatic plants to reproduce the next generation is releasing pollen that can float on water surface and form spores to grow into new plants.Meanwhile, land plants cannot spread pollen or se eds like aquatic plants. Wind-pollinated plants are suggested way to generate pollen from one plant to others. Seed also require a protective case. Conclusion This essay briefly tells us the different between aquatic plants and terrestrial plants. They have their own advantages and disadvantages such as terrestrial plants require evolve of roots to absorb nutrient from deep ground; plants in water require a chamber to store the gas. The structure adapted to withstand gravity for terrestrial plants. How difference between the ways of reproduction. Musics impact on Life essays
Music's impact on Life essays Personal Essay In peoples life there is a point, a main focus, that causes that person to become what they are. For me that point or focus is music. To me its more than just music, and it is involved, in some way, in virtually every aspect of my life. It is also what I hope to support myself on in form or another. That is my ultimate dream. Music governs my life everyday, and not just when Im singing, playing guitar, or studying music theory. It influences my life every time I hear a song and every time I even think about music. When I wake up the first thing I do is turn on music. It starts my day and gets my brain flowing in the morning. This is an essential part of my life as I find listening to music in the morning helps calm me down whenever things get hectic during the day. Then I go to choir and vibrations, all in a row. This aspect is the only time I regret it because I have to put so much time into it, whether it be rehearsals or just sorting things out. Not to say I dont enjoy it, its just taxing. These classes teach me appreciation for all types of music, not just the ones I listen/play. Also included in my school life is music theory, which is one of the most interesting classes Ive ever taken. This class helps me implement the things I learn into my own playing and writing. A fter I go home on the weekends I mostly write music and play in my band, Wynkus, with Andrew Roberts playing drums and Daniel Nix on bass. Playing in a band is the most enjoyable thing I have ever done. Its the foundation of why I want to be a musician. These things so far have all been directly related to music. But I also find that I am governed by music in the way I related and act towards people, the way I see current issues, how I si...

Hamlet - Appearance Vs. Reality Essays - Characters In Hamlet
Hamlet - Appearance Vs. Reality Essays - Characters In Hamlet Hamlet - Appearance vs. Reality Hamlet one of Shakespeare's greatest plays, where the young prince of Denmark must uncover the truth about his fathers death. Hamlet a play that tells the story of a young prince who's father recently died. Hamlets uncle Claudius marries his mother the queen and takes the throne. As the play is told Hamlet finds out his father was murdered by the recently crowned king. The theme that remains conezt throughout the play is appearance versus reality. Things within the play appear to be true and honest but in reality are infested with evil. Many of the characters within the play hide behind a mask of falseness. Four of the main characters that hid behind this mask are Polonius, Rosencrantz (Guildenstern), the king Cluadius. From behind this mask they give the impression of a person who is sincere and genuine, in reality they are plagued with lies and evil. There appearance will make it very difficult for Hamlet to uncover the truth, the characters hide behind. Polonius the kings royal assiezt has a preoccupation with appearance. He always wants to keep up the appearance of loving and caring person. Polonius appears like a man who loves and cares about his son, Laertes. Polonius speaks to his son with advice that sounds sincere but in reality it is rehearsed, hollow and without feeling. Polonius gives his advice only to appear to be the loving caring father. The reality is he only speaks to appear sincere as a politician, to look good rather then actually be good: "And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry. This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man. Farewell; my blessing season this in thee!" Act 1 Polonius gives his son Laertes his blessing to go away, he sends a spy to follow him and keep an eye on him. This shows his lack of trust for anyone, he gives the appearance of a confident father who trusts his son to go off on his own. In reality he lies about his trust for his son by sending a spy to watch him. His advice he gives his son is rehearsed and only said to give the appearance of a loving father. Polonius further adds to the theme appearance verses reality by ordering Ophelia to stop seeing Hamlet. He lies to her telling her that Hamlet does not love her, he only lusts for her, in truth he does love her: Ay, springes to catch woodcocks. I do know, When the blood burns , how prodigal the soul Through the play Polonius hids behind his mask appearing to be honest loving parent. In reality Polonius lies, manipulates people and eavesdrops on peoples conversation. Polonius helps contribute to the theme appearance verses reality by showing how his appearance is not his true nature, behind the mask there lies someone totally different. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are two of Hamlets childhood friends who when asked by the king, try to find out what is troubling the young prince. Both help to contribute to the theme by showing there appearance of being Hamlets friends. The pair go to Hamlet pretending to be his friends when in truth they are only there because the king asked them to find the truth. There is some irony within the twins, they are asked by the king to find out the truth by hiding within a lie, by pretending to be his friend: A dream is but a shadow Act II. Hamlet knows there purpose for their visit is to dig into his soul to find the real reason for his actions as of late. As the play continues the twins are asked again by the king to go to Hamlet and try again to find the real reason for Hamlets behavior. Hamlet insults them at every chance knowing they are lying to him about there purpose of the visit: Tis as easy as lying; govern these ventages with you finger and thumb, give it breath with your mouth...Act III As the melodrama continues Hamlet goes with the twins to reclaim money that another state owes Denmark.

Are Parts of the U.S.A. Patriot Act Unconstitutional Research Paper
Are Parts of the U.S.A. Patriot Act Unconstitutional - Research Paper Example A Patriot Act is not unconstitutional becauseâ⬠¦ 1. The Patriot Act enhances effective communication between various agencies that fight against terrorism 2. It liberalized many rules with respect to investigation and surveillance to help Federal agencies responsible for crime prevention. 3. It provides increased funding for victims of terrorist attacks and their families, as well as for the rebuilding of business and infrastructure that are damaged by terrorism 4. It helps investigating agencies to deal with the technologically sophisticated terrorists. 5. It cut off support networks that provide enough support to terrorist groups The major criticism labeled against the Patriot Act is the threat raised by it to the fundamental rights and liberties of people. In the name of safety and security, investigating agencies can interrogate and imprison anybody based on suspicion. It is not necessary that the information gathered by the investigating agencies is always correct. False inf ormation lead investigating agencies to arrest even innocent people in the name of Patriot act. It is impossible for Americans to keep their privacy intact after the introduction of this act. In short, patriot act prevents people from enjoying their natural rights, freedom and liberties. The second disadvantage of patriot act is the fact that it allows indefinite imprisonment of anybody based on mere suspicion without access to counsel or meaningful recourse to the Federal courts. Before the introduction of Patriot act, it was mandatory to the investigating agencies to present a person in custody in courts within a specified time period. Now it is possible for the investigating agencies to keep a suspected person in custody as long as they wish without presenting him in the courts. Even innocent people forced to suffer the torture of investigating officials because of these controversial clauses in patriot act. ââ¬Å"The Patriot Act provides sweeping power to government agencies to monitor the personal habits of not only those who have been identified as suspected terrorists, but anyone residing in the United States as well as United States citizens residing abroadâ⬠i. The third disadvantage of patriot act is the permission given to Federal agents to conduct searches without search warrants. Earlier, search warrants were mandatory before conducting any searches in houses or apartments. Now it is not necessary for the investigating officials to get the permission from courts to conduct searches in any locations. It should be noted that even during midnights, investigating agents creating troubles to innocent people. In short, investigating officials can misuse the authority given to them by patriot act to conduct searches without taking permission either from the courts or from the suspected person. The patriot permits FBI to monitor even religious services, internet chat rooms, political demonstrations, and other public meeting

International Adoption Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
International Adoption - Essay Example The adoption process brings an influx of emotions for anyone who is remotely involved within the process. This is true whether one is a child awaiting an adoptive family, a family who is desperate for a child or a social worker hoping to find a match between a waiting child and a waiting family. There are as many types of adoption as there are types of families who pursue adoption in order to complete their family. Domestic, international, familial, transracial, special needs and older adoption are just some of the adoption options available for individuals and families to pursue (Adoption.com, 2009). Whether a family is pursuing domestic (within the United States) or international adoption, many of the steps are similar, however international adoptions require an intensive paperwork collection, a knowledge of the sending country's culture and demanding financial costs. In order to understand the adoption process, an individual or family wishing to pursue adoption should conduct extensive research into the adoption process and choose an adoptive agency that is suited to their needs and beliefs. A quick perusal of the internet shows a multitude of agencies available both nationwide and worldwide, many with agency locations throughout the United States. One such agency, Bethany Christian Services, offers extensive services to both birth parents and adoptive parents and has a multitude of locations and support services. "Bethany Christian Services began in 1944 as the fulfillment of a dream shared by two women, Marguerite Bonnema and Mary DeBoer. The agency now employs nearly 900 individuals and is the largest national adoption agency" (Bethany Christian Services, Working at Bethany, 2009). Bethany Christian Services houses its corporate offices in Grand Rapids, Michigan and offers "70 locations nationwide and services in 15 countries" (Bethany Christian Services, Working at Bethany, 2009). One of the countries that Bethany Christian Services participates in international adoption with is China, which they began working with in 1992 and have two programs with. Per Bethany's website, "all adoptions in China are processed through The China Center of Adoption Affairs (CCAA) in Beijing, China (Bethany Christian Services, Working at Bethany, 2009). China is one of 77 countries who participate in the "Hague Convention on the Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Inter-country Adoption (Hague Adoption Convention)" (Intercountry Adoption, 2009)). The agreement was "concluded on May 29th, 1993 in Hague, the Netherlands, and established international standards of practices for intercountry adoptions. The United States signed the convention in 1994, and the Convention entered into force for the United States in April 2008" (Intercountry Adoption, 2009). "Children of Promise is a program that Bethany Christian Services provides for chidlren with speical needs as man y of the children from orphanages may have developmental or oganizational delays" (Bethany Christian Services, Working at Bethany, 2009). In 2001, China reported having "25% of the children adopted by United States citizens" (International Adoption Facts, 2009) and continues to be the top country of choice for international adoptions. Of note, China's adoption to the United States increased three times from 1992 until 2001 while in 2003, there were 4,681 children placed in the United States (travel state Government, 2009). "In October, 2001 the China

ACCION International - Essay Example These initiatives aimed at improving economic growth in the places that had been affected by acute poverty. This article will provide a general opinion regarding the readings concerning the economic performance. This organization provided financial services in the form of loans and business training to enable the poor individuals to sustain a decent lifestyle. In both cases, they have developed microfinance institutions that are able to achieve several financial factors (Chu 5). This enables them to attain a significant scale in the market. All contributions made were directed to the economic development of the poor countries. Therefore, they used two methodologies to develop commercial microfinance institutions. The first method involved performing a transformation of the Non-Governmental Organizations to microfinance institutions. The second priority was based on creating equity funds, which will enable to provide a capital base for the microfinance institutions (Chu 9). The Non-Governmental Institutions could also be transformed into financial institutions to manage the economic crisis. In conclusion, this will enhance partnership in most commercial banks and maintain a strong leadership position in the microfinance industry. Furthermore, the transformation will entail the development of certain methodologies that enable the microfinance institutions to serve individuals from the low-income population. This will substantially boost the outreach of the microfinance segment in the society (Chu 17).
